Director
Jiho, the director based on Seoul. He started his career in 2012 by submitting co-creative works to the Seoul Fringe Festival. The work was a rather experimental work which combining dance and music, mime and play. After that, in 2014, he directed a American play Deathtrap written by Ira Levin. With that work, he is known as a play director and translator.
Deathtrap was more successful than any other plays that are released that year, and made the comedy thriller genre that had never seen light in Korea to emerge. After that, he directed the Elephant Song by Nicolas Bilon and The Old Wicked Songs by Jon Marans in 2015. Both works are recognized for box office success and artistry, and are still being performed to this day.
He has been working in musicals as well, made the world premiere of the British musical Midnight in Korea. After that, he continued his musical work in Japan with the Maybe Happy Ending and Sonata of a Flame. After Japan, he also entered in China. He is working with AC Orange in China.
His most recent work is an experiment in preparation for the post-COVID-19 era. As soon as the audience watches the performance at the venue, the performance is broadcast in real time around the world. He is trying to improve the perfection of the broadcast video without disturbing the audience that visited the theater. This experiment is in progress through the musical Sanata of a Flame. This work is currently available at performance venues for Seoul, and movie theaters nationwide in Korea and Hong Kong, and also can be viewed online at Presented Live.
Although he is a director, he is also passionate about education. He has been directing and teaching at a private academy at the end of each year. He studied and practiced with the students every day for 10 weeks. The subject was Albert Camus’ Les Justice. The memory of that time made him feel that art is beautiful once again, and was an opportunity to revive his passion.
